Health issues are always on our mind. Whether it’s down to our size, weight, fitness levels or anything else related to exercise, there’s always a chance that something we love or rely on becomes and unhealthy obsession. Even healthy things such as exercise and portion control can become things that we obsess over due to how powerful they can become. There are people all over the world who take fitness extremely seriously, and there are times when that addiction can take over not just their body, but also their thoughts.

The only things on their mind will be getting fit, eating right, and packing on muscle to show off in the future. Sadly, there’s a time and place for these things and it’s not uncommon for it to turn into an unhealthy obsession. Dealing with fitness addiction can be easy, but it’s important that we try to understand why it happens and why it’s a bad thing.

Discard the perfectionist ideal

There’s no such thing as the perfect body. Our bodies can become a symbol of healthy living and regular exercise, but that doesn’t guarantee happiness and nor can we say it’s the perfect body. Instead of stressing over trying to reach a certain fitness level or become a particular weight, focus on small goals instead.

For instance, worry about what your next mini-goal is and not your long-term goal. Think more about why you’re doing it, understand why you’re getting fit and try to re-think your reasoning. Don’t let a mental image of the perfect body affect your decision making or be the sole reason for your fitness goals, ensure that you’re doing it for a healthy and positive reason.

Health concerns with too much exercise

Not only does overdoing it on exercise negatively affect your body, it also creates a lot of safety issues. For instance, if you ride too much on a bicycle, you’ll get fatigued on the road, you’ll slowly start to wear your ankles and knees (especially important when you’re old) and you may need a good bicycle accident lawyer. Small steps to a big goal

One of the mistakes that many people make when they first start out in fitness is they give themselves unreasonable goals. They might say they have to do 100 push-ups per day, or they might limit themselves to a few hundred calories a day in order to lose weight. While some people can actually do this because they have the mental fortitude and willpower, it’s not exactly healthy. Your body needs to cope with small changes, not drastic ones that happen suddenly.

If you’re going to cut down your eating and take in fewer calories, then make sure you take small steps to do so. For instance, start by cutting soda out and replacing it with soda, fruit juice, and then eventually just water with the occasional treat. Instead of eating a large meal when you’re at a fast food restaurant, eat the regular sized meal. These small changes are much easier to digest and it helps you enjoy the things you love without developing an unreasonable obsession with your fitness goals.

Finding the right balance

For a lot of people, fitness takes up a lot of time because they’ve integrated it into their lives. For instance, they may have sold their car in favor of a bicycle, or they might prepare all of their meals over the weekend so that they have simply ready made meals to heat up during the weekday. These are fantastic tips to help boost your health, but they’re usually enough unless you want to build up a lot of muscle or if you’re trying to burn excess weight.

It’s important that you try and achieve a good balance of working out in addition to the rest of your life. For instance, maybe you’re not resting enough to give your muscles time to repair themselves. If you constantly exercise and don’t give your body some time to rest, then you’re eventually going to be fatigued and lack energy at certain points of the day. If it’s seriously affecting your health, then take a step back and cut down on the amount of exercise you do, or add a couple more calories to your diet. Treating yourself now and again is worth your time.
