Are the roads more dangerous than we realize? For once, we’re not talking about the people driving the cars. That’s a given, and honestly, at this point, it’s kind of expected. There will always be individuals on the road who don’t drive as safely as they should. There will always be those who aren’t as attentive as they need to be and yes, this will create problems. It will even lead to loss of life, but there might be other dangers that drivers are completely unaware of. What are we talking about here?

Potholes And Problem Areas

If there are any potholes on a road that you drive down regularly, you might not think they are a major problem. Since you drive them so frequently, you can skirt around them, slow right down, or drive fast enough that you don’t even notice them. The problem with this is that the pothole is probably getting bigger with every car that drives over it. The best case scenario is that it’s filled in before it becomes a problem. If it isn’t then it could cause serious damage to vehicles. It might even lead to an accident because it could cause a driver to lose control of a vehicle. That’s just one example of how much of a threat poor maintenance can be on our roads.

However, there are certainly bigger problems.

Aging Bridges

Bridges last around 42 years before they start to show signs of wear and tear. You might think that’s quite a long time, and it is, but there are bridges all around the country well past their sell by date. Bridge analysis companies often find that road bridges aren’t safe to drive on at all. The main threat here is a natural disaster. In areas where earthquakes are common bridges are supposed to be designed to withstand the largest quakes. Unfortunately, that’s just not the case. Many would tremble with even the slightest earthquake making them dangerous for drivers.

Trouble With Traffic Lights

This is a particularly interesting one because it’s been criticized as a way for the government to fine people unfairly. There are plenty of people who will risk running a red light. You might be late of a meeting, or you could be desperate to get to an event on time. It is of course, always dangerous. However, you could be in danger through no fault of your own. Traffic lights do fail on occasion, but that’s not the main problem as it’s incredibly rare. The main issue is turning at a crossroads. Sometimes, you can get stuck in the middle of the road waiting for a turn. There should be enough time before the lights go to red for everyone to turn who is in the junction. However, since the times can be adjusted this isn’t the case. If you are in the junction when the light goes red, you might be hit with a ticket. Worse still you could turn when you think it’s safe and find the traffic on the other side has already received the green light.

You see, not all the dangers on the road are related to drivers. Some are deadly and completely unavoidable, no matter how safely we drive.
